In these vehicles, moisture could enter electronic components, causing overheating and failure of the additional coolant pump. The engine was inspected, and it was discovered that there was heavy oil sludge.
The oil pump in my car is chain driven and I believe this was changed to gear driven the following year.
A failed oil pump will not allow oil to certain parts which can cause catastrophic engine failure.
