You can always detect a bad coolant temperature sensor by reading the engine diagnostic code, but you can also detect it by the increase in fuel consumption, the sudden change in the temperature gauge, or by seeing black smoke coming out of. The only real way to determine whether your coolant temperature sensor is faulty is to use a diagnostic tool like VAG-COM to see what temperature the sensor is reporting to the ECU when the coolant is fully warm.
