Quick update, changed the pcv valve for the newest version they do and it seems to have sorted it, engine seems a lot quieter on idle and also seems to pull harder for longer on full boost. The stock PCV on the TFSI engine is quite fragile and over time, or when running lots of boost, the diaphragm inside can rip which can result in excessive blowby entering the inlet manifold at idle (smoking from the tailpipe) or a loss of boost when driving, which can cause other problems. Follow the brake booster hose and see if it is properly connected.
