In the video below by Applause Ndlovu, he uses an oil filter wrench tool, to remove the tips. One thing to keep in mind is that the metal to metal contact during removal (twisting) may be to abrasive and scratch the tips. My gti had a few problems with getting the shift box out, the exhaust diameter was too large.
Now lets look at some less conventional approaches to remove the exhaust tips that also work.
Hamster, it's definately possible to get the shift box out from underneath without dropping the exhaust.
